As a subconsultant, H&H provided structural, civil, traffic, and geotechnical engineering; safety inspection; bridge deck evaluation; and survey services for the Route 195 Southbound Lanes project. The team’s approach was focused on long-term durability and low-maintenance options, incorporating the most cost-efficient and feasible design solutions.

The southbound Downtown Expressway (Rt 195) over Powhite Pkwy (Rt 76), the CSX Railroad tracks, and Ramp S was constructed in 1975 and had exceeded its design life. The bridge is located on a busy, urban, high-speed interstate carrying more than 85,000 motorists per day.

The bridge has two column piers and steel pier caps, which makes maintenance-of-traffic and staged construction, particularly challenging. To minimize potential traffic impacts, Synchro modeling and analyses were used to determine the most feasible and effective sequence of construction and transportation management plans.
