H&H provided Total Design and CSS for this $17.7 million project involved design for emergency repairs to the bridge deck of the 134-year-old Washington Bridge, an iconic steel arch between Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan and Morris Heights in the Bronx.

Rehabilitation work designed by the entrant included steel repairs to stringer ends at deck expansion joints; steel repairs and partial replacements to floorbeams; bearing replacement for the stringers; replacement of the existing deck expansion joints and portions of the deck at the joints; and milling of the existing deck overlay and replacement with new asphalt wearing course with waterproofing. The project was executed using a staged construction approach to maintain traffic on a minimum of three lanes and one of the two sidewalks throughout construction.
