Connecticut Receives Funding for H&H-Designed Conn River Bridge Replacement

November 4, 2020

Connecticut recently announced that it was awarded $65 million in federal funding to begin the replacement of the 113-year-old Connecticut River Bridge. The funding will kick-start the replacement, which is meant to streamline travel and reduce delays for rail and maritime traffic along the Northeast Corridor.

H&H honored to be serving as the lead designer for the preliminary and final design of the replacement bridge. The existing Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge was constructed circa 1907 and comprises a two-track, open deck, electrified railroad bridge, 1,564-foot-long, consisting of seven thru-truss spans, two-deck girder spans, and one 158-foot Scherzer-type rolling lift span. The bridge carries approximately 35 passenger trains and six freight trains per weekday. In recent years, the draw span of the bridge has been operated approximately 3,700 times annually to accommodate navigation on the Connecticut River.

The CTDOT Walk Bridge also receiving funding. H&H conducted a Feasibility and Economic Analysis Study to evaluate the options for the Walk Bridge and is currently serving as Owner’s Rep on the project for CTDOT
