The Route 36 Highlands Bridge connects Sea Bright and Atlantic Highlands over the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The new bridge replaces a movable bridge originally built in 1932. The two new precast segmental concrete box girder structures provide a 65’ vertical clearance over the Shrewsbury River and carry two 12-foot lanes of traffic in each direction.

The 1,600-foot-long bridge consists of two separate structures with span lengths from 109 feet to 231 feet. Each structure is 46 feet wide and varies in depth from 8 to 11 feet. The precast segmental concrete piers have a hollow box shape and are vertically post-tensioned. The superstructure is built in a balanced cantilever using barge-mounted cranes.

Corven Engineering, an H&H company, was the engineer of record for the special segments and created the final design and details of special segments, segmental bridge specifications, and engineering support during construction.
