H&H acquired firm Lawrie & Associates, performed the preliminary and final design of a bicycle/pedestrian crossing the Tennessee River. The crossing’s goal is to stimulate growth in the South Waterfront Area of South Knoxville, expand the pedestrian and bicycle access in and around the proposed bridge site, complement the current and planned growth at the University of Tennessee, and must be an iconic structure while striving to provide the best balance of quality and economy. To meet the geometric considerations, the river crossing will be approximately 1,000-ft-long with a 450-ft main span, minimum.

With a 710-ft main span and multiple side spans approximately 130-ft in length, a graceful concrete arch bridge advanced to the final design. The aesthetic quality of the bridge complements that of the nearby Henley Street and Gay Street Bridges. Constructability and addressing the wind and vibration needs are also important factors in its design.

The project is currently awaiting funding.
