H&H is responsible for the rehabilitation/replacement of four bridges on the Bronx River Parkway, which span a busy commuter rail corridor that includes Metro-North, Amtrak, and CSX tracks. The project also includes rehabilitating a 1,500-ft viaduct over the New York City Transit yard.

H&H is completing the final design, which includes complex staging to maintain vehicular and rail service throughout construction, topographical survey, ROW mapping; hazardous waste/contaminated materials screening, in-depth inspection, evaluation of fatigue-prone details; level I load ratings; repair details for flag conditions; interim repairs to expansion joints; existing median barrier modifications, seismic evaluation; development of rehabilitation/replacement alternatives utilizing steel trapezoidal box girders, prestressed concrete beams and concrete segmental box girders; evaluation of environmental, wetland, and land use impacts, including tree survey and development of Section 4(f) documents.

The project includes the design of a single-span steel structure over the Metro-North Railroad tracks and a concrete arch structure over the Bronx River. Also included is the reconstruction of the abutments to facilitate the new superstructure using integral abutments behind the existing abutments, which will be maintained as retaining walls. The project scope involves geometric roadway improvements and rehabilitation or replacement of the structures, including:

  • Replacement of a two-span bridge over three railroad tracks, Amtrak and CSX, and eliminating the center pier to increase horizontal railroad clearances (Site B)
  • Replacement of 1500 ft. of the viaduct over NYCT yard – 12 tracks (Site B)
  • Replacement of a single-span over Metro-North – six tracks (Site A)
