H&H served as Engineer-of-Record for the reconstruction of the eastern rest pier (abutment) for the historic Carroll Street Bridge, a retractable bridge that has been closed since 2021 due to settlement of the existing foundation on the eastern approach. Originally opened in 1889, the Carroll Street Bridge is one of only four remaining timber-retractile bridges in the United States.
As part of the rehabilitation, H&H designed and detailed the new concrete abutment, adjacent soldier pile and lagging walls with precast panels, and the moment and approach slabs. Throughout design, the team worked closely with NYCDOT and the Gowanus Canal remediation team to refine project details and improve constructability, helping facilitate successful delivery of the work.
The bridge reopened on June 15, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the restoration of one of New York City’s most distinctive historic movable bridges.
