H&H is providing movable bridge engineering for the detailed design of the new Sustainable Transport Bridge. The new 207m crossing is a key element of Waterford City & County Council’s urban regeneration project which will extend Waterford City Centre across the River Suir to encompass the North Quays Strategic Development Zone. A collaboration with Roughan & O’Donovan and Knight Architects, the new bridge is designed to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and a local public transport shuttle bus.

To fulfill the requirements of their Master Plan, the client required that the proposed bridge’s design be iconic and unique and bring a ‘wow’ factor to Waterford City Centre. All shipping and navigation requirements had to be accommodated, including the provision of an opening section. Commercial vessels, tall ships, and recreational boating will all require access to the upstream area of the harbor and upriver.

As part of an earlier phase of the project, H&H contributed to the preliminary engineering design services. The team’s design option study resolved the technical design constraints while exploring possible creative designs. The design report provided budget estimates for the various options, including recommended bridge configurations.

As the project progresses, H&H is anticipated to provide bid evaluation and tender assistance, as well as construction administration and commissioning.
