MNR, Community & H&H Celebrate The Reopening of the Third Avenue Bridge in Mount Vernon

August 11, 2021

Metro-North Railroad (MNR), community leaders, and H&H celebrated the ribbon cutting at the reopening of the Third Avenue Bridge.  The bridge had been closed to traffic and pedestrians for more than a decade causing a roadblock between the downtown corridor and South Mount Vernon. The bridge replaces a crumbling 121-year-old structure and is the latest of four bridges that span Metro-North’s New Haven line in Mount Vernon to be replaced in three years. The rehabilitated bridge abutments include micro piles, tiebacks, and mechanically stabilized earth elements to meet seismic demand requirements.  The design integrates adjacent approach intersections to provide safety improvements (ADA compliant), traffic signals, and street lighting.  H&H provided comprehensive engineering services from initial inspection and load ratings through final design documents.

The project includes five additional bridges in various stages of design and completion.
