Little Pine Island Causeway Road and Bridge Celebrates Ribbon Cutting

March 26, 2026

On Tuesday, March 24, H&H’s Steve Nappi, PE, Nicole Nappi, and Cal Santarelli, joined project partners and community members to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Little Pine Island Causeway Road and Bridge Reconstruction project in Matlacha, an event that also marked the 100-year anniversary of the community. Attendees heard remarks from Lee County Commissioners and the Florida DOT, highlighting the project’s significance in enhancing resilience and strengthening a vital connection for surrounding coastal communities.

Owned by Lee County and overseen by Florida DOT, this project is critical as the causeway serves as the only access route for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Emergency repairs were completed immediately after the storm to restore connectivity, followed by ongoing permanent reconstruction efforts.

H&H is providing construction engineering and inspection services for the project, which includes the installation of 2,100 linear feet of sheet piling with a concrete cap to protect against future storm erosion; reconstruction of roadway and utilities, including potable water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, lighting, and communications; and replacement of the existing bridge with a new 250-foot, five-span structure, all while maintaining traffic access throughout construction.

Delivered using a phased design-build (PDB) approach, the first of its kind in Florida, these improvements strengthen resilience, enhance reliability, and ensure long-term connectivity for the Pine Island community.

Congratulations to H&H, Florida DOT, Lee County, and the entire project team contributing to this important effort.
