The Hurricane Ian Sanibel Island Access Project has received national recognition from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), earning the National Award of Merit, the National Award of Excellence, and the Chair’s Award for 2025 at the DBIA Design-Build Conference & Expo.

DBIA’s National Design-Build Project/Team Awards celebrate exemplary use of the design-build delivery method, honoring teams that embody the principles of Design-Build Done Right®. National Merit Awards are presented by market sector, while National Excellence Awards are given at the discretion of the jury to the most outstanding project within each sector.

The Chair’s Award, selected personally by the DBIA National Board Chair, is one of DBIA’s highest honors. The award is not given every year. It focuses on triple-bottom-line success that spans beyond cost and schedule performance to the project’s impact on the community and others served by the project.

For the Hurricane Ian Sanibel Island Access Project, H&H was part of the Superior-de Moya Joint Venture Team, along with FDOT District 1 and the Central Office, as well as other partners, to assess storm damage, develop rapid-response solutions, and implement both temporary and permanent repairs. The team’s innovative approach restored access for emergency responders and the public in record time, while ensuring the long-term resilience and durability of the reconstructed causeway.

This project has also earned multiple other honors, including the Regional America’s Transportation Award for Quality of Life/Community Development (Medium Category) from the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO), the ASCE Florida Section Project of the Year, and ENR Texas & Southeast Regional 2025 Best Project in the Highway/Bridge Category.
