This project grew from Renfrewshire Council desire to connect Renfrew and Yoker across the River Clyde. The brief didn’t limit its goal to providing a functional crossing that met all navigational requirements and site constraints; it also sought to unify these two communities through symbology. The inspiration came from the Clyde’s history as one of the world’s great shipbuilding regions.
The pylons and stays hark back to a time when advances in shipbuilding and maritime engineering shaped these communities’ identity. That legacy is reflected in the engineering principles that informed the bridge’s elegant solution. The form, span configuration and movable systems demonstrate what can result when architecture and engineering reside at the table from the onset.
European delivery models aren’t necessarily “ahead” of the US models; rather, they recognize that building for the future also accounts for civic pride, which some would say is the true measure of a successful project.
Six months after opening, 2.1 million vehicles and 87,000 pedestrians and cyclists crossed it, immediately and consistently. We’re proud that Renfrew Bridge has improved the lives of locals while respecting the region’s cultural legacy.
