Renfrew Bridge Opens In Renfrewshire, Scotland

May 8, 2025

H&H celebrates the opening of Renfrew Bridge in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Opening ceremony events will take place in Meadowside Street from 14:30-16:30 on the 8th of May. The double-leaf bobtail cable-stayed swing bridge will open to road traffic on the 9th of May, 2025.

H&H led the design of the swing spans and movable elements with trusted partners Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD). The design-build project team includes GRAHAM, leading the overall scheme, Hollandia Infra, and Iemants joint venture, leading the swing span team. The new crossing provides vital connectivity for communities on both sides of the River Clyde.

Renfrew Bridge is the eye-catching lynchpin of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside (CWRR) project. The project’s mission is to facilitate job growth, education opportunities, residential development, healthcare access, and leisure activities by transforming the waterfront and surrounding area. The bridge also provides new links to Scotland’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMIDS).

The 184-meter double-leaf cable-stayed swing bridge connects roads, cycling, and walking routes from the Yoker ScotRail station to Inchinnan Road in Renfrew and offers improved access to Glasgow Airport. Last spring, the leaves voyaged from Belgium and the Netherlands, respectively, and arrived by barge in Scotland. H&H/ROD collaborated on the design of the swing bridge superstructure, cable-stay system, deck joints, and pivot machinery.

Each span is 92 meters long, making it one of the world’s largest double-leaf bobtail swing bridges. With an asymmetric or “bobtail” arrangement with 65-meter forward spans and 27-meter back spans, the crossing accommodates vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians on two carriageways and two footpaths. The spans are gear-driven and operated by an efficient electro-hydraulic system capable of swinging each span 110 degrees open for marine vessel passage.

Renfrew Bridge was jointly funded by the UK and Scottish governments, and the owner is Renfrewshire Council.
