A New Chapter for a Historic Crossing: The Glen Island Bridge Opens Ahead of Schedule

May 15, 2026

Westchester County officially celebrated the opening of the rehabilitated Glen Island Bridge in New Rochelle, NY, marking a major milestone in the modernization of one of the region’s most historic transportation structures.  The project was completed six months ahead of schedule.

H&H provided the design for the rehabilitation and is currently performing construction inspection services for the project, continuing a legacy dating back to the bridge’s original 1927 design by H&H’s predecessor firm, Waddell & Hardesty.

The project involved a comprehensive rehabilitation program designed to modernize the structure while preserving its historic character. Work included structural, mechanical, electrical, and operational upgrades to enhance safety, reliability, and long-term performance.

Key improvements included the repair or replacement of major structural, mechanical, and electrical components; enhanced traffic and pedestrian safety features; increased structural capacity; extended service life; and reduced long-term maintenance requirements.

Mechanical and electrical upgrades included modernized span lock machinery, full electrical system replacement, a redundant emergency drive system, and new lighting and traffic control gates. Structural improvements included replacement of the approach and bascule span superstructures, installation of a new steel grid deck, upgraded bearings, and rehabilitation of the bridge’s historic railings.

To maintain access throughout construction, the project team installed the longest single-span temporary bascule bridge, which remains open to ensure continued connectivity to Glen Island Park.

“This project has focused on long-term durability, safety, and sustainability from the initial assessment through final design and now construction,” said H&H Principal David DeLuca, PE, DBIA. “It has been extremely rewarding to extend the life of this historic 100-year-old structure, which will continue to serve the public for many years to come.”

The Glen Island Bridge rehabilitation reflects H&H’s ability to balance preservation and performance, delivering modern engineering solutions that respect the history, function, and long-term resiliency of critical infrastructure assets.
